Honister Slate Mine
I was on a short holiday in Grasmere and it was raining cats and dogs. Like lots of others (on a fine day they get 2 or 4 for the tour) I came in out of the rain and went on a tour of the slate mine. There were two parties of about 30 each and a bus to take us up to the mine entrance. We were all fitted with hard hats with lamps as we walked along lots of pitch black tunnels between the caverns where excavation work out been done on the this the sole working slate mine in the UK. Very interesting!
