View from the French Memorial in Gourock

Sam Torrance and Maisie

Two friends, Gillean and Irene, and I with our dogs, Maisie (mine) and Mitzi (Gillean’s) had a short holiday in Largs in July.  I drove and we stayed at the Woodhouse Hotel in Largs.  When we were there a son of Largs, Sam Torrance, a famous golfer came into the lounge and as you can see took a shine to my cute Norfolk Terrier Maisie, who is a tart and is anybody’s.  He took selfies with her and texted them to his wife (for those too young to know the famous and lovely actress Susanne Daniel) and his  daughters.

Gillean’s father was skipper of one of the Clyde steamers and we visited Wemyss Bay where Gillean lived as a child, her childhood bedroom was at the base of the tower and is now unoccupied.

The magnificient views were taken from the Free French Memorial Cross above Greenock on Lyle Hill – it looks out over Gourock and the Firth of Clyde to Cowal in the west, and north over the Fort Matilda area of Greenock to Argyll across the Clyde.

We took the ferry to Millport in Great Cumbrae on Wednesday – it was early closing day in the afternoon – but it was lovely.

For my annual Somerset holiday, I stayed again in 2022 at Lookout Lodge in East Harptree, Northeast Somerset, on the north facing slope of the Mendips, looking out towards Chew Valley Lake. The holiday accommodation is on the same site as the Viewing Platform. This was the last remaining WW2 cabin existing in the UK…
